Billy Myles-Berkouwer is currently studying on the MA Painting programme at the Royal College of Art. His work has been exhibited internationally, with work exhibited in the US, Costa Rica, and the UK.
Myles-Berkouwer's practice explores new methods of image and object production and places these in dialogue with the art historical context of painting. The focus on the ephemeral nature of objects and images in the work seeks to question what new meanings emerge when these objects are chosen in the creative act and elevated to a subject of sustained study and reflection.
Myles-Berkouwer is interested the theory of painting and considers painting a radical act due to its conjunction with the body and subjective consciousness. In the contemporary context, in which the drive for accumulation, productivity, and efficiency is primary, there are few places where this relationship between subject and image-object can form.
Techniques in code, software, and web browsers, as well as phone cameras and screens are incorporated into the content and creative process of Myles-Berkouwer's work. These techniques contribute to formal choices involving colour, texture, paint application, material and framing. Sometimes, machinic processes are used in aspects of the painting process, such as printing, laser cutting, metalwork, and CNC routing.
